Terrariums

Earlier this week, I went to visit my friend and we made terrariums!  We had been talking about doing it for a while and finally set a date.

We had fun planting them.   We both bought plants and then shared them with each other.  After I got back home, I also reclaimed some moss that I found around on the shady side of our garage. 

Of course, my terrarium has a lid and the whole thing is a bit fogged up right now, so I can't get a good photo of it completed.  I also ordered some mushroom figurines from Etsy (when I was a little girl, we would go mushroom hunting with my grandpa for these Morel mushrooms) to put inside my terrarium.  I saw a really cute gnome figurine, too, but I'm waiting a couple days to order him.

Of course, I'm not really sure if my plants are suited to terrarium life, so we'll see if they survive.  We had fun planting them, which was the most important thing!

Well, this week I have manage to not finish any Christmas gifts...although I did finish this quilt top maybe about an hour ago.

 I bought the kit at a LQS (Thimbles).  The fabrics are all flannel.  It had this pattern [5 & Dime a fat quarter quilt] included with it.  The top turned out larger than I had imagined it would be, for a child/lap sized quilt.  Obviously, I could have looked at the dimensions, but must not have.  Once I got going on this, it took not much time at all.  The kit included enough fabric for binding (which will be from the striped piece that is included in the quilt top).  Now, I'm just trying to decide how I want to back it.  I do have a piece of pink chenille that I bought on sale at Hobby Lobby earlier this year.  Really, I have some of the material left from the long strips that could be used (and are supposed to be) for part of the back...but then I'd have to buy more flannel...  hmm... may have to think on this one a bit. 

Yesterday, I also purchased a new addition to my plant family....

I have been wanting an orchid for quite some time.  I am always admiring orchids that belong to others.  Anyway, yesterday we went to a pretty large craft fair.  We have gone for quite a few years in a row now.  My husband enjoys it as much as I do.  We purchased several Christmas decorations for the outside of the house...I just didn't take photos of those.  Anyway, there is a local orchid greenhouse that has been at the craft fair the last several years. This year, I came home with an orchid.  He did give me a sheet that tells the type of orchid this one is...but I don't have that sheet next to the computer and I'm not going to get up to get it right now :-)  Anyway, wish me luck! 

I'd better get back to work!  I do plan on finishing a couple Christmas gifts tonight, plus I have a dish to make for a work Thanksgiving dinner (that is being held tomorrow).

My Wake Up

This is how I woke up this morning:

I was sleeping, very content, when I heard a semi-loud thud following by my husband hollering at the cats.

  Admittedly, it is partially my fault.  You see there is a cabinet set into the corner where the wall that is part of the living room and the hall wall meet.  I tend to let mail get stacked up there (see 2010 Commitment #1).  It is also the place where we store our jar of cat treats. 

As soon as my husband is up in the morning, or arrives home from work in the morning, at least one cat is on the "perch" waiting for treats to be dolled out.  Well, I'm guessing that he hadn't passed out treats yet (why do it right away?) and one of the cats was sitting on the mail...the mail slid out from under the cats...the cat slipped and tumbled off the perch...and the plant go knocked over and busted wide open. 

Now I've got to go and buy a new pot today because I certainly don't have any pots that size just sitting around in the garage :-( 

Donkey's Tail Gets a Trim

I have this cute flamingo planter in which I have a "Donkey's Tail" plant. I think that I originally purchased the plant, much smaller in size, as a "mercy buy" from Walmart. I always feel so sad for those plants because no one seems to be taking very good care of them.

This plant has done unbelievable well in the spot where it sits in the kitchen. The problem is that the "tails" get a bit unruly at times and then I end of with a bunch of little broken off pieces all over the floor. So, it had to have a "hair cut". You can see that I cut a bunch off. I'm sure by the end of the summer, the tails will be quite long again.

I just wish I had another pot to throw the cut pieces into or something. hmmm...wait...maybe I do...I'll have to check that out.
