Where have I Gone Wrong???

Help! Where have I gone wrong? I am doing Marie's Sock-A-Long over at Permission to Unwind and obviously, I have not done something right because my sock is all backwards now. Marie has a nice photo of this stage and her needle #1 on the right, with the needle with the yarn attached on the left. How is mine backwards? Did I shift the stiches wrong? I had started on my heel and got in one row of knitting and one row of purling...only to see from the fabric of the sock that the bumpy side, not the pretty stockinette? side??? was on the outside of the sock. So, I painstakingly undid my two rows of stitches and am waiting for instruction! Can I just purl the first row instead of knitting it? I don't want to be a sock failure!

Ok... I wish I were there to help in person! My guess is that you must have turned your work at some point and re=knit over a section that you had already worked. It happens easily if you are a new knitter and put the work down and come back to it later- sometimes you can't remember which direction you were going. I see it happen often. I'm not sure how to tell you to fix it except to try and pull out a couple of rows to get back to the spot before there was a problem. Golly. It's totally fixable, but I'm struggling with being able to explain it without being able to show you. My best advice is to carefully pull out a couple of rows (I would do it stitch by stitch using another needle so that you don't have to come back and try and pick up all those teeny stitches at once). You should be knitting around counter-clockwise from the heel flap as you pick up stitches along the side and start working the instep. Is that clear as mud? If you want to call me I am happy to talk you through it on the phone. Drop me an email and I'll give you my number. :o)

I think I fixed it! Okay, not really fixed so much as looking at it with a different perspective! If you imagine the set-up with the cuff above the needles as in the photo in the post below this one, I just pushed the ribbing down thru the needles, I guess reversing it, but then I was able to have my "set-up" look like the photo in your first "sock-a-long" questions post. I then knit one row and did a purl row and it is coming out correctly, so I will continue. It might not be perfect, but it will work for me :) lol. Thanks for your quick response Marie!

i bet that's what happened, sally!! i bet you somehow turned it inside out accidentally while you were knitting the ribbing - i had that happen to me, but i noticed that the ribbing was on the inside before i started knitting, and flipped it. easy fix!! :)
